The makeover episode!

This site just got a big makeover. Everyone needs a makeover from time to time. I like to think I just talked my blog out of tall, hairsprayed bangs. Er…I hope it wasn’t that bad. In any case, you can now do things like: Buy prints of some of my paintings and my photos Get to my art and photo portfolios easily (from the top menus) Enjoy a cleaner interface Quietly appreciate that I finally updated my version of WordPress, so a bunch of broken things are no longer broken! I’d love to hear what you think! And, Happy Mother’s[…]

A love letter to Chilango

Photo from The London Insider Dear Chilango, Thank you for being in Angel, so close to my flat. Thank you for being the “#1 Mexican Restaurant” in London according to Zagat 2011 (which, sorry, isn’t really that big of an accomplishment as there’s not a lot of competition, but still, congrats). Thank you for making burritos that can sort of pass for actual burritos. Even the London Burrito blog thinks so. Thank you for your bright, cheery decor. Thank you for having cilantro on hand, which at first I thought you didn’t, because I asked for cilantro, and Brits call[…]

Soon Obsolete / Elsewhere Public Works

It,s December 30th, and Lefteris and I are sitting in our suite at a 5-star resort on the south coast of Spain at the tail end of an absolutely AMAZING road trip. I can’t wait to play with (and post) my photos from his trip, but for now, here’s something from the archives… This photo is from my camera phone, but I ran across this on a fence in downtown San Francisco last summer: My advice: CALL THE NUMBER. Then visit the website: elsewherepublicworks.com. Then, and only then, learn a bit more about what this is, and rejoice. Share this…TwitterLinkedinPinterestemailGoogle+

Me & Nidhi talking

A couple of evenings ago I had the pleasure of spending several hours with my very good friend Nidhi, who does the awesome sketches I post from time to time. We sat in the bay window of my living room talking, enjoying the breeze (in the midst of the ridiculous SF heatwave), and eating frozen yogurt for approximately forever and I felt super-ultra-recharged when she left. Then yesterday, this was her sketch of the day! This is totally my apartment–my window, my favorite chair, my stacks of books, my painting, the clothes I was wearing that day…and since I’m moving[…]

Audio for sorting algorithms

These were forwarded to me by my brother Adam, who also helped me out tremendously by writing a little app I used to change Excel files into audio, so that I could find out what web analytics data sounds like. This guy has put audio to several different kinds of sorting algorithms and accomplished just what I was after with the web analytics data–listening teaches you something about the process that would be much harder to grasp in words, or maybe even visuals. Though in this case the combo of audio and video is what really works, I think. Share[…]

A print of Nidhi’s

I just found this pink frame hiding under a pile of stuff in my studio, and thought this print of Nidhi’s illustration might work in there–and it does. Love it. Too bad I will now leave for London and not see it for three months. But still! To the left is a vintage-style baseball, sitting in a wooden hand, with a tiny hat on it. Kudos to Gabe for hat placement. Share this…TwitterLinkedinPinterestemailGoogle+

Sometimes bad things happen.

Paintings are ruined.  People behave selfishly.  Luggage is lost. These are the times when it’s most valuable to get the kind of message I got yesterday.  I’m heading to London for 3 months (in a week!) and intend to do a lot of side trips while I’m there.  My coworker wrote: If anyone can find themselves on a midnight train in Morocco speeding toward an obscure music festival in the desert, it’d be you.  If anyone could find themselves dipping toes in the Black Sea from a fisherman’s boat, it’d be you.  If ANYONE could find themselves in the capital[…]
