I am writing this from a toddler table

2015: what a year. In some ways, it’s been a rather quiet year for us. To put that in perspective, here are the big events of the last 5 years of my life: 2010: Moved to London. Met Lefteris. 2011: Got engaged. Got married. 2012: Moved back to California. Got pregnant. Had a big fat Greek wedding. Had a baby. 2013: Returned to work after maternity leave. Got pregnant again. Quit my job at POSSIBLE (a great job!) to switch to consulting (while pregnant). 2014: Had another baby. Nursed her for over a year (moms know how much work this[…]

2014 – what a year

So much excitement, but so little blogging. Here we are headed into 2015…I hope for just as much love and happiness as 2014 brought, along with a little more time for personal projects! Lefteris and I had a magical afternoon on Treasure Island the first time he came to visit. It was after I’d spent a summer in London and decided to move there for another year or so, so I had to come back to California to pack up my stuff. Lefteris joined me for a week, and we like to say that California seduced him on that trip[…]

Welcome, Idalia Kai Grammatas!

On February 24th, at 12:30 am, I gave birth to a wonderful, beautiful, healthy baby girl. She came about 3 weeks early, catching us a little bit off guard, but Lefteris is a veteran dad now and he got the house, and Perry, in order while I labored at home for a few hours. We had a wonderful experience at the hospital, and truly couldn’t have imagined a better labor and birth overall. Now we’re home with our daughter and her big brother, settling into our new normal family life and loving it. She’s an amazing baby – so good-natured[…]

Introducing…

…the one, the only, the amazing, the magnificent, Perseus Theodoros Grammatas! Born 10/11/12 (to two math geeks – pretty apropos!), 7 pounds, 2 ounces. We had a difficult delivery ending in an emergency c-section after the doctors realized he was breech, but ultimately any delivery that ends with a healthy baby and mom is a very successful one! We’re calling him Perry, since that whole name is a little bit of a (fantastic) freight train. We are utterly in love with him. He’s also already exhausting us, of course. As soon as we got home from the hospital I took[…]

Kilouba

…is the Greek word for “giant belly”, and that is what I have right now. Many thanks to Emily for the awesome photos! I’m due in less than a month and can hardly wait to meet this not-so-tiny-anymore human robot growing inside my body. How bizarre and wonderful. If this isn’t enough, all the photos are here – and I promise, we’ll be getting to things that aren’t photos of ME ME ME very shortly.

Our wedding – the “pie-cutting”

When I started to write this post, the first thing I thought was, I’ll need a link so people can learn more about the pie cutting…and so I can make sure I understand it correctly. After searching and searching (“greek wedding pie-cutting ceremony” and all possible variations) I pretty much gave up on finding an English-language online explanation of this particular event. So I asked Lefteris about this. The conversation went like this: Me: What’s the pie-cutting ceremony called in Greek? Him: Well, I’m calling it the “pie cutting” because it’s nicer for Americans. Me: Okay…but what’s it called in[…]

Our Big Fat Greek Wedding

Well, we finally did it! As you may already know, Lefteris and I had our civil marriage almost a year ago in London. And while we’ve been very much married this year, we never thought of that as the “wedding” – we’ve been planning THIS wedding in Greece ever since. (What we didn’t plan is that I’d be 6 months pregnant for the wedding!) Photos were done by my photography mentor and great friend, the lovely and talented Emily Wheeler. So on July 14, we made it even more official, by having back-to-back Greek Orthodox and American ceremonies at the[…]

Hello Strangers!

It’s been more than a little while since I’ve posted any kind of update whatsoever here, and SO MUCH HAS HAPPENED. A few of my last posts were teases, too – I still haven’t put up my photos from Venice or Geneva (this orchid was from our hotel there), or done any explanations for Round 2 of the ZAAZ portraits I shot toward the end of 2011 in London. …but since then… Brussels We went to Brussels for a weekend. Haven’t even edited those photos yet! Christmas We spent our Christmas holiday in Spain (and a little bit of France)[…]
