Idalia’s Nursery

With Idalia’s first birthday fast approaching (!!), I thought it might finally be time to post photos of her nursery. Having two kiddos has really taken over my blogging time, so this post is, oh, nearly a year late. But hopefully worth the wait! Back before we knew that Perry’s name would be Perry (before we even knew he was a “he”!), we just called his room “the Explorer’s room”, and I really went for an exotic vibe in there. This time around we had an advantage, interior-design-wise: we didn’t get around to doing Ida’s room until she was a[…]

Knitted Pith Helmet

Our little explorer is coming! And he or she needs hats – explorer-appropriate hats! What’s more appropriate for a tiny explorer than a tiny knitted pith helmet? Apparently this isn’t something that’s been done before – why, I don’t know. But I had to come up with a pattern that would create the right kind of brim and contouring. Pith helmets look pretty much like this: …and following a couple of prototypes, my tiny knitted one looks like this! Baby hats are possibly the BEST knitting project out there because they’re the maximum amount of adorability in the minimum amount[…]

Making the dresser

The big addition to the Moroccan Room before the baby was this dresser/changing table, which I suppose I didn’t exactly make, but I did hack and embellish to a point of unrecognizability. We bought the Tarva at Ikea for the base, and two nice wood planks to make a larger top plus four brackets from Home Depot to build this thing. I love lamp

In the midst of creating the Explorer’s Moroccan-ish Nursery, I found some spare time to whip up a lamp for Lefteris’s office. We bought this lampshade at Ikea with this design in mind; then I just got a standard lamp kit from the hardware store, and constructed this from bamboo I had around the house. YES, I said “bamboo I had around the house” – I have several sticks of bamboo around and I’ve been using to for all kinds of things for years, periodically cutting it to size when necessary. I use it for curtain rods a lot –[…]

And now, we wait. (And hang out in the Explorer’s Room.)

We’re as ready as we’re gonna get. How do you really prepare for a baby? We have all of the truly necessary stuff, we’ve put everything in order, and we’ve cleared our schedules for the coming weeks. But I can’t think of anything we can do to even begin to prepare ourselves mentally for the fact that our little Robotaki is about to emerge and become a real, live, screaming human. I’m due in four days, which means this could happen anytime…we just don’t know when! Back in London, we used to do a lot of traveling with friends. Usually[…]
