New painting: Polygons (7&8)

It’s been AWHILE since I’ve posted new paintings – I suppose having a couple of kids does that to ya. The kids are bigger now, so I’m finally capable of getting a few minutes in a row to myself. And, I’ve accepted that I need to adapt time-wise, so …watercolors! I’ve been drawing more of these, but this is the first one I’ve completed. 7 & 8 are both blues, but different hues, so the hue for each shape is based on its number of sides. This is a 12″x16″ watercolor on paper.

Spreadsheet painting (in progress)

…has been surprisingly productive, especially considering all of the stuff that’s been going on! Before I left for SF I started this painting. I needed to draw a grid of dots, so I marked things off with tape. Then the real work began. I had previously printed out pages of random numbers generated in Excel, and punched the numbers out using a hole punch. (Great hand exercise…) I painted concentric circles of color corresponding to each number, and then placed the punched out number in the middle. I did this at random (placement-wise) at first, so I could work out[…]

Completed: 7000

Two days ago i completed a painting – the first in a long while. I dreamed this up in Greece, the first time I went to Athens. I love how simple this is – I think it’s just a lot “cuter” than any of my other work. And I like thinking that I can convey something like this through my synesthesia. Lately I’m getting the urge to paint again; I like that. I have two more in the works right now…more to come…

0580184057: in progress

Last night, I finished my first real painting in London! I started this one (and two others I’m in the process of finishing up) back in California. It’s the third (and final) in a series; the other two are 4970006670 and 0350200450. I was all excited about what I was painting… …in fact I was so excited that I couldn’t stop myself, and I continued painting long past when I should have stopped, and I ruined it. Sad me! Then I was about to leave for the summer in London, but I reeeeeeally wanted to finish this trio before I[…]

I’m painting again

…finally. It’s been about six months since I’ve had a place to be creative, and I’m up and running again. It. Just. Feels. Wonderful. First order of business: finishing three paintings I couldn’t wrap up before I moved here. Two of the three have the numbers painted in a matte finish while the rest of the painting is glossy. I found that my SAD light, which is super-bright LED light, is GREAt at revealing the edges of this. I knew I loved that thing.

So awesome: Gabriel Dawe’s string art

I used to do this kind of art when I was a kid, stringing thread or string through holes in paper to make straight lines that produced the shape of a curve. I completely remember – and can picture clearly – one of these projects, with white and red string on blue poster board, that I felt like I could stare at for hours. It really inspired me to see the beauty and elegance in geometry and math, back when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old. Gabriel Dawe is doing it at a massive, beautiful scale, and I[…]

505: Complete (for now)

Like 200, this one is done by virtue of the fact that I’m gone and can’t work on it anymore. Had some issues with the gloss/matte mediums that haven’t been problematic before, which I’m sure is due to using lighter paint colors. So I think I will go back and highlight that when I return, but it’s done for now: The numbers are there, at the bottom…
